RNA Medicine
Working together for the RNA Medicine of the Future
Together with numerous partners, ISAR Bioscience is exploring the potential of RNA medicine as a technology of the future. The focus is on developing novel specialty lipids for RNA drugs, on therapeutic nucleic acids, and on the training of young scientists.
The BASE-Lipid future project (“biodegradable, safe, and efficient specialty lipids”), coordinated by ISAR Bioscience, received a total of nearly 13 million euros in funding from the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs. These novel lipids are designed not only to efficiently and stably encapsulate RNA drugs and to release them specifically in certain organs, but also to be biodegradable and particularly well-tolerated. The network includes the companies Bayer AG, Evonik Technologies, and NGP Polymers Jena, as well as the Universities of Würzburg and Jena. More than a thousand novel LNPs have been produced to date and tested for their efficacy and tolerability.
When administered intravenously, they make it possible to reach not only the liver but also other organs and to deliver RNAs to, for example, immune cells and heart muscle cells.
ISAR Bioscience is a founding member of the Munich Future Cluster C-NATM for the development of new nucleic acid-based therapies. In this context, following extensive joint preparatory work, ISAR Bioscience supported the formation oft he spin-off company rnatics from the Technical University of Munich. This is a joint effort to bring novel nucleic acid based therapies for severe lung infections into the clinic.
ISAR Bioscience is part of the RNAmed graduate program to train young scientists in the emerging field of RNA medicine.
Together with Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, ISAR Bioscience is leading the effort to establish a supraregional network for RNA medicine. The RNA Valley is set to receive approximately 10 million euros in EU funding.
