Fighting Alzheimer’s Disease Through Innovation
We are developing worldwide unique 2D and 3D models of Alzheimer’s dementia. We use these models to test the effectiveness of antibodies developed in our Alzheimer’s program.
The goal of the ISAR Bioscience project “Alzheimer 3D” is to develop valid models for Alzheimer’s research. To this end, we are using iPS cells to generate 2D and 3D models of Alzheimer’s disease that are unique worldwide. The iPS cells are differentiated into several types of human brain cells and brought together to create models for the disease. These models aim to enable the reproduction of characteristic features of Alzheimer’s disease and to allow the in vitro testing of potential drugs.
ISAR Bioscience is working closely with Professor Dominik Paquet of the Institute for Stroke and Dementia Research at Munich’s Großhadern Hospital. The Federal Ministry of Research supports this project with a two million euros grant of the “KMU-innovativ: Biomedicine” initiative.
As part of the Alzheimer 3D project, we are currently testing the efficacy of antibodies targeting a protein relevant for Alzheimer’s disease. Our lead candidate is a therapeutic antibody provisionally designated as “M07.” It strongly activates the target protein TREM2 in certain brain cells and demonstrates efficacy in a cell culture model of Alzheimer’s dementia.
The Paul Ehrlich Institute, the relevant German regulatory authority, confirmed that ISAR Bioscience is well on its way to developing a new Alzheimer’s therapy with the M07 antibody. We will now establish a specific master cell bank for the new antibody to enable its continuous production in accordance with Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) guidelines. Clinical trials can begin following further preclinical studies and toxicological tests.
