Fight­ing Alzheimer’s Dis­ease Through Innovation

We are devel­op­ing world­wide unique 2D and 3D mod­els of Alzheimer’s demen­tia. We use these mod­els to test the effect­ive­ness of anti­bod­ies developed in our Alzheimer’s program.

The goal of the ISAR Bioscience pro­ject “Alzheimer 3D” is to develop valid mod­els for Alzheimer’s research. To this end, we are using iPS cells to gen­er­ate 2D and 3D mod­els of Alzheimer’s dis­ease that are unique world­wide. The iPS cells are dif­fer­en­ti­ated into sev­eral types of human brain cells and brought together to cre­ate mod­els for the dis­ease. These mod­els aim to enable the repro­duc­tion of char­ac­ter­istic fea­tures of Alzheimer’s dis­ease and to allow the in vitro test­ing of poten­tial drugs.

ISAR Bioscience is work­ing closely with Pro­fessor Dominik Paquet of the Insti­tute for Stroke and Demen­tia Research at Munich’s Großhadern Hos­pital. The Fed­eral Min­istry of Research sup­ports this pro­ject with a two mil­lion euros grant of the “KMU-innov­ativ: Bio­medi­cine” initiative.

As part of the Alzheimer 3D pro­ject, we are cur­rently test­ing the effic­acy of anti­bod­ies tar­get­ing a pro­tein rel­ev­ant for Alzheimer’s dis­ease. Our lead can­did­ate is a thera­peutic anti­body pro­vi­sion­ally des­ig­nated as “M07.” It strongly activ­ates the tar­get pro­tein TREM2 in cer­tain brain cells and demon­strates effic­acy in a cell cul­ture model of Alzheimer’s dementia. 

The Paul Ehr­lich Insti­tute, the rel­ev­ant Ger­man reg­u­lat­ory author­ity, con­firmed that ISAR Bioscience is well on its way to devel­op­ing a new Alzheimer’s ther­apy with the M07 anti­body. We will now estab­lish a spe­cific mas­ter cell bank for the new anti­body to enable its con­tinu­ous pro­duc­tion in accord­ance with Good Man­u­fac­tur­ing Prac­tice (GMP) guidelines. Clin­ical tri­als can begin fol­low­ing fur­ther pre­clin­ical stud­ies and tox­ic­o­lo­gical tests.
